For years I stuck with Android phones some cheap some mid-range some expensive and I avoided iPhones. Every Android phone I have had would frequently slow down and need apps to be deleted or moved from internal memory. Not a good user experience. Then about 5 years ago I wanted to buy a tablet for taking hand-written notes storing ebooks and annotating PDFs for a year-long full-time university course (a PGCE). Of course being used to Android I first looked at Android tablets and borrowed a Nexus to test. The experience was awful. It was unusable for handwritten notes and not smooth at all when doing anything other than a bit of web browsing. I visited an Apple store that was nearby and tried out an iPad Air. I was blown away with the flity of the device and ended up buying it and a couple of cheap styluses. The iPad Air performed flawlessly over the duration of the course and beyond. The main document we used to track our progress on the course was a 15 page PDF. By the end of the course my PDF doc had grown to around 3 pages what with all of the hand-written notes d essays photos and other bits and pieces all annotated pasted and inserted into the document. I ended up splitting the document into two parts because the iPad would get a little sluggish loading it but other than that and once the document was split it handled everything I threw at it perfectly without noticeable slowdown or crashing. My experience with this iPad (and hence of iOS) persuaded me to ditch the Android phone that I was using and try an iPhone. I had a similarly good experience with the iPhone as I had had with the iPad I didn need to worry about managing applications and the device remains silky-smooth and a pleasure to use. A very different experience to the multiple Android phone I had been using over the years. iOS for the most part remains a user-centric experience focused on productivity which is why many people like it.
